“Too Far From Home” Anxiety

Article 14 Articles 1

Was your mom over-protective, a Nervous Nellie, a Worry Wart, who always cautioned you to “stay close to home”? Were you programmed during childhood to believe that the world was a dangerous place?

Mother’s personality was like this while carrying you as a fetus inside her, and anxiety and fear were the most frequent and predominant emotions that were infused into you while you were developing inside her body.

I’ve coined this issue, “Womb Anxiety” which looks like Generalized Anxiety Disorder. We’re not sure what we’re afraid of~ but we never feel safe, secure or totally at ease. You could have developed this issue even before you were born if Mom was always worried, fearful, anxious, etc.

Attempting to attach meaning or a ‘face’ to your anxiety may make it seem less daunting or scary, but it actually works against you, and keeps this problem alive.

If you want to travel, but get anxious if you go a little farther from home than you’re used to, this is a simple matter to correct! Use your deep-breathing and self-soothing techniques, and stay out of your head.

Very likely, you’re still hearing your mom’s frightened, worried voice, and it influences your ability to feel safe in your world. You are safe, so self-soothe and respond tenderly to the difficult feelings in your body. This is your first order of business before you do anything else.

Now, let's deep breathe into any/all feelings in your body, self-soothe for 2 minutes, and stay the hell out of your head!

Start increasing your travel from home with baby steps. Extend the distance from your house only ½ to 1 block daily, every one to two weeks. Remember to use your anxiety mantras and self-soothing tools, the moment you begin to feel anxious.

Anxiety Mantras (for your convenience):

“Whatever comes up, I will handle it.”

“If I take care of today, tomorrow will take care of itself.”

“It’s all gonna work out fine.”
